Why is the Test Done?
17-OHCS is a breakdown product of steroid hormone, cortisol. The levels indicate adrenal cortical activity. Cortisol hormone is involved in protein and carbohydrate metabolism in the body. Causes of raised levels are Cushing syndrome, severe stress, burns, infection, steroid therapy and pregnancy. Decreased levels are seen in Addisson’s disease, ACTH deficiency, starvation, kidney failure, liver disease.
